Manus & Machina - Fashion in an Age of Technology

Issey Miyake (1990) & Nora Raviv (2014)

The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute's spring 2016 explores how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde read to wear.

It shows more than 170 ensembles dating from the early 20th century to the present, the exhibition addresses the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (Manus) and the machine (Machina) at the onset of mass production. It explores this ongoing dichotomy, in which hand and machine are presented as discordant tools in the creative process, and questions the relationship and distinction between haute couture and read to wear.

Many pieces are a piece of Art than a Garment to wear...  Stunning beauty...

The Metro Show

The Metro Show was held on the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City.

There are many American Folk arts and the art work which has a story and can imagine a story. There are pieces from southern folk art to Dan Dailey's interesting lighting works. Since I didn't grow up in the States and live in New York, it is hard for me to see and understand American culture and humor. So I love the Metro Show since I could see some of American culture through the American folk art pieces.

IFPDA 2014

If you are an art lover, you love to have a well known artist art works. You will love to check the IFPDA/printfair/2014 out. From Pablo Picasso to Keith Haring, there are many remarkable print works. There are two special print works which caught my attention: Japanese print works and German expressionist print works. Also, it was interested to see many well known artists' works in Europe since it is hard to see them many art fairs in New York or other cities in US.

IFPDA Foundation at Park Avenue Armory, Park Avenue & 67th Street on Wednesday, November 5, and runs from November 6 through November 9.

Spin Ceramics in NYC

As most know, people from all over the globe became enamored with Chinese porcelain works during the 17 th century. Artisans in the international community worked diligently to reproduce the craftsmanship. The influence became so strong, that you can clearly note the similarities between European Bone China, Japanese porcelain, Korean porcelain, and Chinese porcelain works. During the civil upset after the 19 th century, China lost its hold as the leader of artisanal porcelain works. Japan happily stepped in and took their place as the industry leader.

Spin Ceramics is of particular interest to me -- holding strong to the history and foundation of porcelain itself. I find it particularly curious that much of the Chinese pieces are presented in a Japanese fashion. I hope that history will repeat itself and China will once again become a leader in porcelain manufacturing during the 21 st century. As pioneers of the art form it would be a shame for the Chinese to permanently loose their grip on the marketplace.
