Miami Art Week 2017

For one week a year, Miami becomes a global destination for art, design, music, and all things visual culture. Celebrate the year in art as collectors, art lovers, and curators come together for the most talked-about art fairs, openings, and events.

I attended this year for the first time and checked 12 different art fairs for four days.  It was so much, but it was a fun at the same time.

UNTITLED, Miami Beach

6th edition was held at south beach, so sunlight and a spacious layout were very nice. 39,000 visitors attended this year including many collectors, curators, and international museum professionals.

I found the Gallérie International which presents performing artists got my attention even though they didn't show anything in their both beside the list.

SCOPE, Miami Beach

The 17th edition of SCOPE Miami Beach was held at the sands of Ocean Drive and 8th Street. Featuring 140 International Exhibitors from 25 countries and 60 cities. SCOPE Miami Beach was poised to lead the charge for the emerging contemporary art market.

Art Miami & Context

Celebrating its 28th edition, Art Miami kicked off Miami Art Week, where it held its reign as the leading international contemporary and modern art fair. Along with sister fair CONTEXT Art Miami at Water Front.  The two fairs welcomed more than 80,000 attendees, and more than 15,000 guests to the VIP Preview.  Multiple dealers participating in Art Basel were in attendance during the Black Car.

Design Miami

I could see many galleries from the "Salon: art and design" in NY, but how they presented the show was very different.  I could say the Salon show was more sophisticated, but Design Miami is more innovate and creative.

FOAM Miami

First edition, 25 galleries were participated.  I could see many nice decorative art works.  The location was across street from the Art Basel (Miami Convention Center).

Pulse Miami Beach

Over 70 Galleries from across five continents participated.  I attended VIP Preview Brunch.  It was located in Indian Beach, Miami Beach.  Bloody Mary was a great idea for Brunch.  Many fun and interesting art pieces were presented as well.  It was a most fun art fair including location and how they presented the fair.

Nada, Miami

NADA is geared toward a wide range of people.  In Miami, NADA is an alternative platform, selling contemporary art at lower price points than the Art Basel fairs and often showcasing the “newest of the new” and the sometimes re-discovered.  It is art from the past, present and future.  I really enjoyed it.

Miami Art Basel

Art Basel’s 16th edition in Miami Beach, this year's show saw the debut of a new floor plan and show design, which was widely praised by exhibitors and collectors alike. The show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, featured 268 premier galleries from 32 countries, who presented outstanding works, ranging from Modern masterpieces to contemporary painting, sculpture, performance, photography, works on paper and film – some of which were created specifically for the fair. Across the five show days, the fair attracted an attendance of over 82,000, including influential collectors, directors, curators, trustees and patrons of leading international museums and institutions.

Fair

The first alternative, non-commercial, contemporary art fair featuring public works and surprise performances by some of the world’s most iconic and trailblazing women artists such as Yoko Ono, Guerrilla Girls, Pia Camil, Jillian Mayer, Juana Valdes and Micol Hebron, among others.

It was small but very different from most of other fairs.  It was held at Brickell City Centre, Miami Downtown.  I could feel how big Miami art week is in Miami.

Aqua

13 editions was held in the Aqua Hotel with 52 Galleries which made the art fair more unique and fun, but I couldn't find much different art works.  But if you are looking for a fun opening, please check it out.

about Miami

It was a very unique city.  I could see many Art Deco Buildings, many colorful lighting on the buildings at night, and many Spanish speaking people.  So there are quite good Spanish cuisines.  Wynwood Art & Miami Design District are nice to check it out...

KIAF 2017 ART SEOUL

16th edition of the KIAF 2017 ART SEOUL was held at the COEX Hall A & B in Seoul, Korea September 20. The show is until September 24 (Sun). 167 galleries from 13 countries are participated this year.

I had visited the Kiaf a few times in the past. But this time, I was impressive at how much international the KIAF is. When I started to walk around the fair. They provide us two packing wine and small cheese and olive for VIP. VIP package was so cute. I went around the show a few times to see overall to detail.

I could see many art works which has Asian flavor:

#JonghwaLee #MikyoungKim #SunchelKim #JeongminSuh

Some of Older Korean Artists works: #KimSou #MyungsikKim #SuFanOh

New Artists works with fun multimedia ; #DaunJeong (Fabrics acrylic on Canvas)
#YongRaeKwon (Stainless Steel on Canvas) #LaurenMartin #Hwancho

At the fair, there is a gallery, which got my attention, the East gallery from Taipei.  Most of  galleries present modern or contemporary art works, but the East Gallery shows more traditional style painting by Chien Bih Wang.  I had a good conversation with the art director, Eric Koehn.  He said the artist was a feminist and the concept of painting was not traditional like the style of painting.  More surprisingly, His booth was popular among the VIP females.  Many people stop by looked at the painting or took a photo in front of paintings...  To me, the style of painting wasn't definitely my favorite, but it was an oil painting, but somehow it looks like Chinese watercolor painting which was interesting.

Attended two conversations;  Gyungseong Dadaist in 1920's (me with #YoshikawaNagi, photo above left) and Post-War Abstract Art in Asia (#MatsutaniTakesada, #HoKan and #ParkSuhBo, photo by clockwise )

Gyungseong Dadaist in 1920's; Based on the book the Dada in Tokyo, The Dada in Gyungseong (Seoul's older name) by Japanese Literary critic, Yoshikawa Nagi.  She said 1920's dada was created by Young artists who lived in dramatic time period with their passion and youthful mind.

Post-War Abstract Art in Asia; three major contemporary Artists: Park, Seobo (Korea), Ho Kan (Taiwan), and Matsutani Takesada (Japan) talked about their life with their art works.  It was very nice to hear how they have lived after the war in three different countries as an artist.

I really like Park, Seobo's phrase, "In the future, Artist should create artworks which can heal people's mind living in fast growing stressful society".

Art in Hongkong 2017 Summer

Hongkong has been a big Art Market in Asia. I have been in Hongkong a few years back as a tourist. But this visit was more business related so I could see different side of Hongkong which was interesting.

I met Yim Tom who is an antique gemstone jewelry designer (www.yimtom.com) at HongKong last March in AsiaweekNY2017 Metropolitan museum reception. Then we connected. This time I could visit their studio and could checked her husband's works. Her husband, Fung Mingchip is a Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy artist. In his Chinese character, each painting has different style and story which was fun.

I visited storage space for a private client then visited a few galleries in Hongkong which was fun... Hongkong has many great galleries and artists even though the island is very small.

Art and Antique 2017 Summer in Hampton

This year, there was only one Art fair in Hampton.  There are usually three : Hampton Art Fair, Southhampton Art Fair, and Market; Art and Design in Hampton...  I usually attended all of them or at least two....  But checked only the Market  Art and Design.  It was big, but the party was ok...  The show was ok as well, but it was good to see the trend of Art Market.

Hampton Summer outdoor space is always beautiful.

My Favorite works; #Don'tEverCallme by #DavidDrebin

Of course, could find recent fame artists pieces ; #MrBrainwash #DamienHirst #TheProducerBob #MrDebonair

Luckily, there was the Bridgehampton Antique Show opening across street from the Market; art and design.  I could find my favorite #1950 #Knoll and #1970 #MiloBaughman which made me so happy.
